Casey replaced Kevin McHale as coach of the Timberwolves, after McHale coached the Wolves for thirty one games in the 2004-2005 season in an interim capacity following the firing of longtime Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders.
Casey was a long-time Seattle SuperSonics assistant coach, first under George Karl and then under Nate McMillan. Prior to his stint in Seattle, he spent five seasons coaching in Japan and several seasons coaching at the collegiate level. Casey played college basketball at the University of Kentucky between 1975 and 1979, and would later serve as an assistant coach there.
Casey was banned from coaching in the NCAA in 1990 after being tied to sending cash payments to Chris Mills, who was being recruited to play at Kentucky. However, Casey was never found guilty of the charges, and won a considerable anti-defamation lawsuit as a result.
